Five easy steps to get your self-hosted WordPress website up and running
1. Buy your domain and hosting plan
Choose and register a domain name at a domain registrar. I use NameSilo. If you decide to go with NameSilo, use coupon code “AMBRETHEMES” to receive 10% off your first order. Then sign up for a hosting plan. I use SiteGround (referrer link). SiteGround offers affordable prices and good customer service, and WordPress recommends them.
2. Point your domain to your hosting
Find the nameservers (DNS) for your website in your hosting account. Then enter the nameservers into your domain account. If you have trouble finding the nameserver information, contact your host’s technical support. Note: Skip this step if you purchased your domain via your hosting company.
3. Install WordPress
Most hosting companies offer one-click WordPress installation. In the cPanel of your hosting account, look for a WordPress button. The button will probably be located under a section titled “Autoinstallers.” If you have any issue installing WordPress, your host’s technical support can provide assistance.
4. Purchase your theme and the Genesis Framework
Now comes the fun part — choosing a theme! Of course, I hope you find a theme in my shop you love. But even if you do not, I recommend you choose a theme built for the Genesis Framework (affiliate link). The Genesis Framework offers best-in-class security and search engine optimization for your website.
5. Install and set up your theme
To install your theme, upload the theme zip file via your WordPress admin. Most theme providers offer installation and setup instructions. And some theme providers offer an installation and setup service, so you can have your theme installed and set up for you if you prefer.
Congratulations! You just learned how to start a self-hosted WordPress website. Now go get started!
Note: If you purchase using an affiliate/referrer link, I receive a commission or credit at no extra cost to you. I only recommend brands I use and trust.
